چکیده

1. It has been proposed that growth and reproduction of animals is frequently limited by multiple nutrients simultaneously. To improve our understanding of the consequences of multiple nutrient limitations (i .e. co-limitation) for the performance of animals, we conducted standardized popUlation growth experiments using an important aquatic consumer, the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. 2. We compared nutrient profiles (sterols, fatty acids and amino acids) of rotifers and their diets to reveal consumerdiet imbalances and thus potentially limiting nutrients. In concomitant growth experiments, we directly supplemented potentially limiting substances (sterols, fatty acids, amino acids) to a nutrient-deficient diet, the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elonga(us, and recorded population growth rates. 3. The results from the supplementation experiments corroborated the nutrient limitations predicted by assessing consumer-diet imbalances, but provided more detailed information on co-limiting nutrients . While the fatty acid deficiency of the cyanobacterium appeared to be of minor importance, the addition of both cholesterol and certain amino acids (leucine and isoleucine) improved population growth rates of rotifers, indicating a simultaneous limitation by sterols and amino acids. 4. Our results add to growing evidence that consumers frequently face multiple nutrient limitations and suggest that the concept of co-limitation has to be considered in studies assessing nutrient-limited growth responses of consumers.

Evaluation of Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Algae Chlorella vulgaris as Diet for Rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and algae Chlorella vulgaris on the production of rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. The Brachionus calyciflorus were cultured using four different types of diets: fresh Chlorella vulgaris (T1), yeast with fresh Chlorella vulgaris (T2), powder Chlorella vulgaris with fresh Chlorella vulgaris (T3) and yeast with powder ...

Effect of Permethrin insecticide and Paraquat herbicide on growth and population density of freshwater Rotifer (Brachionus calyciflorus)

This study evaluated the acute toxicity of herbicide paraquat and the insecticide permethrin and their impacts on growth and reproduction of freshwater rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus according to the guidelines OECD. The acute toxicity (LC50 24h) of paraquat and permethrin on freshwater rotifers B. calyciflorus were 0.541 and 8.997 mg l-1, respectively. The level of exposure responses of roti...

Population growth of Brachionus calyciflorus affected by deltamethrin and imidacloprid insecticides

Rotifers due to their relatively short lifespan, high fecundity and high rate of population growth are ideal for chronic toxicity tests. The aim of this research was to determine the lethal concentrations (LC50 24 h) of deltamethrin and imidaclopride and their impacts on the reproduction and growth of the freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus. Experiments were carried out based on the gui...

Use of Copper to Selectively Inhibit Brachionus calyciflorus (Predator) Growth in Chlorella kessleri (Prey) Mass Cultures for Algae Biodiesel Production

A single Brachionus rotifer can consume thousands of algae cells per hour causing an algae pond to crash within days of infection. Thus, there is a great need to reduce rotifers in order for algal biofuel production to become reality. Copper can selectively inhibit rotifers in algae ponds, thereby protecting the algae crop. Differential toxicity tests were conducted to compare the copper sensit...
